ds, Brad loves baseball. He wants to be a star player like his best friend, Butter. But it turns out that he's almost the worst player on his entire team. The other kids make fun of him, and his dad seems disappointed in him. Now it's up to Brad to come through in the big game -- and the pressure is on! Will he strike out...or become a home-run hero? Kids will love this funny, true-to-life tale of friendship by the author of the popular Angel Park All-Stars series.
Grade 2-4ABest friends Brad and Butter play on the same baseball team. Butter has a relaxed attitude and plays for fun; Brad's father has forced his son to become a perfectionist. The boy must stand a certain way while at bat, swing a certain way, and, most importantly, remain serious at all times. He does not enjoy himself. So why is Butter, who is always messing around, a better player than Brad? Eventually Brad begins to relax and gets a hit, winning the game and everyone's admiration. Over ice cream, Brad explains to his father that Butter is a better coach, but that he would still like Dad to help him practice. In this beginning chapter book, Hughes presents believable characters and situations. Brad's father pressures his son to keep working harder and practicing longer, pushing the boy in a way that other children might relate to, whether in sports or in other activities. Johnson's pencil sketches appear every few pages and add to the story's realism. The children look and act like typical third graders. A good addition to any collection.ABarb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA
