Christine M Irvin is the author of several nonfiction books for children.
Reviewed with Chritine M. Irvin's Egg Carton Mania.
Gr. 2-4. Like other books in the Craft Mania series, each of these volumes offers a dozen simple project ideas using common, inexpensive materials. In the introductions, Irvin gives some tips on what kinds of materials (unwaxed paper cups, tacky glue) work best, some fast facts on American garbage production, and a plea to recycle egg cartons, paper plates, and paper cups into art projects. Egg Carton projects include making a collection box, finger puppets, and a game board. Children who check the introductory pages will be rewarded with the tip that tempera paint, specified in many of the projects, easily chips off polystyrene egg cartons. Readers who skip right to the projects will presumably learn the hard way. Paper Cup suggests ideas from the traditional cup-and-string telephone to a windsock to a model of a locomotive. In both books, each project is presented on a double-page spread with a list of materials, simple directions, "Other Ideas" for variations on the theme, and a number of brightly colored illustrations. These pictures, which look like digital art, show several stages of each project as well as the finished product. Carolyn Phelan
