Kindergarten-Grade 2-A simply told tale of a young girl overcoming her fears on a prairie farm in the 1930s. Addie is afraid of nearly everything, real and imaginary. She's scared of wolves, though she's never seen one, and thunderstorms send her into a panic. One of her favorite activities is visiting her granny, Babcha, but she walks an extra mile to avoid a fenced bull in a neighboring field. One day, the girl discovers her inner strength when a hawk threatens Babcha's chickens. The muted watercolor illustrations are realistic, executed from varying perspectives, and most effective in portraying Addie's emotions. This is the perfect picture book to compare and contrast, both in story and illustration, with Patricia Polacco's Thunder Cake (Philomel, 1990).
