Carol Ross: Sculpture and Reliefs
November 29, 2001-February 2, 2002, Steven Vail Galleries, Des Moines, Iowa
"The Twentieth century taught us that people live by abstractions. They are our realities. Our concept of environment is no exception. Perception is a social phenomenon and environment is, in the final analysis, something perceived in the image of man. Our modes of perception are cultural constructs: high level abstractions that are discernible in the space of environmental and cultural cognition. They are as real as they are imagined.
Carol Ross' work are part of these imaginative schemes and symbolic of the cognitive structures that provide the realities (abstractions) through high participants in an environment (a society) find their common ground. Her works are not social environments, but they are the stuff of which social environments are made."
