Freedom Flight: A True Story tells the story of Taiwanese pilot Chang-di "Robin" Yeh. In 1958, The Republic of China (Taiwan) and American authorities reached an agreement to create a 5th squadron composed of Lockheed U-2 high altitude reconnaisance airplanes. A total of 27 pilots from the Republic of China were trained in the United States. The 5th Squadron became known as the "Black Cat Squadron." The American public learned about the Lockheed U-2 aircraft in 1960 when American pilot Francis Gary Powers was captured over the USSR. That same year, a total of 27 pilots from the People's Republic of China (ROC) completed training as U-2 pilots at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. In July 1960, the CIA provided the ROC with two Lockheed U-2s. In December, the 5th Squadron flew its first mission over the People's Republic of China. Out of some 100 missions, five aircraft were shot down resulting in three fatalities and two captures. Robin Yeh was one of the two pilots captured. Unlike, Francis Gary Powers, Robin Yeh years in captivity were not cut short through his government's intervention. Mr. Yeh was told that his country had abandoned him. After 20 years as a POW of Communist China, he was released and what happened after that can only be described as incredible, but every word is true
