9780615160665: My Bent Tree

My Bent Tree is a hardcover picture book for children approximately ages 3-9. It's a story told in rhyming verse about diversity, overcoming adversity, friendship, social action, loyalty, ecology, and conservation. The theme is GREEN. It contains questions in the back for parents and teachers about diversity and trees. The pictures are very vibrant. Parents, teachers, and children love the story; younger children like the rhyme, while the older children understand the messages. The story shows that even if we are different, we can be okay: "Sometimes we are fine in spite of our dents." It is printed in the United States on recycled paper. The Perkins School for the Blind has made My Bent Tree into a talking book, and a Braille edition for readers who are blind or visually impaired is in progress.

About the Author:

Kathy Brodsky is a psychotherapist, life coach and poet living in New Hampshire. One day while walking her dog, she saw a crooked pine tree. That was the inspiration for the delightful story of My Bent Tree. Her first book, Moments in Our Lives, published in 2004, is a collection of vignettes told in verse about life's turning points from the birth of a baby through old age. Kathy loves spending time with family and friends, and she hates to miss her daily swim! For more information, see kathybrodsky.com.

Review:

As a parent of a child with special needs and a person concerned with preserving our environment, I was thrilled to come across Kathy Brodsky's My Bent Tree. The story is powerful and moving; it fosters awareness, strength, and hope, and demonstrates that great things can be accomplished through belief and perseverance. While the older reader will appreciate the message, the rhythmic verse and fabulous illustrations will have the young ones asking for My Bent Tree again and again! --Selena Sheaves, author, chairperson, Haggerty Special Needs Advisory Council

Don't be fooled by this book. Though it looks like a children's book, it appeals to people of all ages -- parents, teachers, guidance counselors, librarians -- and to non-readers, as well. My Bent Tree addresses differences, the environment, and survival....and offers lots of opportunities for discussion based on the questions the author has included at the back of the book. --Louise Forseze, teacher, founder, Peak Education Performance

This story is so amazing! It is a story about friendship and loyalty. It was very fun to read the story. --Natalie Jenkins, Age 7, Nashua, NH
