Save The Bay's Uncommon Guide to Common Life of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Coastal Waters serves as a bridge between the people who use and enjoy Narragansett Bay and some of the more common plants, invertebrates, fish, birds and marine mammals that share our Bay. This 2nd edition (with 171 pen and ink illustrations, plus 8 pages of color photos) reflects the expanded scope of Save The Bay's work - we have moved from a focus on Narragansett Bay itself to the whole region, including the unique and intimately connected freshwater tributaries and coastal marine waters of Rhode Island. Each plant or creature has its own entry with a beautiful illustration and a text description. Save The Bay's Uncommon Guide is an educational tool for both children and adults to use for learning about Narragansett Bay.

Since 1970, Save The Bay - Narragansett Bay - has been committed to fostering a personal connection between people and Narragansett Bay and encouraging investment in the Bay s future. Save The Bay and its supporters are an active force in southern New England, working to PROTECT, RESTORE and EXPLORE Narragansett Bay and its watershed. Together, we: (1) Advocate for better Bay management on the local, state and federal levels; (2) Restore Bay habitat salt marshes, eelgrass beds, fish runs and shorelines to healthier and functioning conditions; (3) Encourage discovery and knowledge of the Bay through our educational programs; and (4) Seek to create a community of Bay citizens who will preserve the Bay for generations to come.Review:
This book is a fantastic resource for anybody who ventures out onto Narragansett Bay. The Guide's distinct illustrations make it easy to use, and the text summarizes the importance of each species to the Bay. My old copy is tattered from use. This new edition, with color plates, is most welcome. --Warren Prell, Professor of Oceanography, Brown University
Save The Bay has just printed 10,000 copies of an expanded version of its useful Uncommon Guide. It is an updated version of a guide it first published in 1998. The new edition expands the earlier work by widening the focus beyond the Bay to include plants and animals found in freshwater tributaries and coastal marine waters. For each species, it provides an illustration, description, field markings and specifics on where you might find the particular species. The information is drawn from scientific texts, but presented in such a way that it can be readily understood by those without scientific backgrounds. The book also cites the reference works behind it, for those wishing to learn more. Contributors include Save The Bay staff as well as biologists and naturalists from the University of Rhode Island, the state Department of Environmental Management and other schools and agencies. --Peter Lord, The Providence Journal
