Named for the resident Clatsop indians, Clatsop County lies at the confluence of the mighty Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. In the late years of the nineteenth century, the county was a maze of minor rivers, sloughs, and lakes, separated by low ridges, marshlands and shifting sand dunes. Harriet Franklin returns to the land of her childhood and struggles to manage her professional duties as a physician, as well as a complex network of family relationships, some of them broken, hidden, emerging. It is difficult to keep her footing.
