From the economy to terrorism, America faces difficult new challenges. In these times of uncertainty, the question is one of national evolution: can America adapt to the economic, demographic, technological and security challenges of the new century? Moreover, what specific policies can aid this evolution? The American Evolution provides intriguing new insights on these questions, through the synthesis of evolutionary science, quantum mechanics, systems theory, complexity economics, and other emerging sciences of progressive change. Covering a staggering array of pressing issues - the financial crisis, the war on terror, immigration, trade, education, technology, social policy, job creation, constitutional law, elections and more - The American Evolution helps bring fresh insights to illuminate the tough questions we face as a nation.

If America is to overcome its profound geopolitical, economic, and technological challenges, the failed remedies of the past will not work. In their place, Matt Harrison offers his innovative theory of evolutionary choice merging biology, economics, physics, psychology, and philosophy. The American Evolution is a provocative initiative for troubled times. --Robert A. Levy, Chairman, Cato Institute

If we know anything by now in social theory it is that recursive systems are superior to static systems, meaning that a system capable of reflecting on itself, and using these reflections to secure higher levels of efficiency and equity, will prevail over its dogmatic rivals. Matt Harrison trades on this maxim by reflecting on the current economic and moral travails of the United States and reminding us of our own best capacities to change, to evolve. This book is an ambitious and creative use of evolutionary choice theory, a happy fusion of natural selection and freedom of choice, as a normative guide to adapting and restoring the best dynamic versions of the American dreams of progress. The book is a provocative summons to rethink our deepest purposes as a nation in a global economic system. --Fred Frohock, Chair, Political Science Department, University of Miami

Harrison has cracked the genetic code of innovation and progress in America. This book celebrates our intrinsic traits of diversity and free choice and creates a roadmap for reviving the American Dream. --Krisztina 'Z' Holly, Vice Provost for Innovation, University of Southern California, and Executive Director, USC Stevens Institute for Innovation
