Would you switch places with someone you love who is suffering in hell? Jake Barker has finally come home after years of traveling the globe. With his apparent fulfillment of wanderlust behind him, his feelings are mixed. He has come home to a life of routine, and a place where he is enthralled with a love he cannot let go. She is the Secret One. Despite the fact that he tries to 'break free', he finds that all roads lead back to her. In a chance encounter, he meets Natalie Sizemore, who helps him understand the importance of letting go. In his conversations with her, he reflects back on three relationships that had a profound effect on him. As time passes, Natalie's interest in Jake extends beyond his past affairs. It is an amorous feeling that she holds back, yet it grows stronger as the months go by. Jake feels the same way for Natalie, but there is a snag. Apparently writing for his own personal growth, Natalie stumbles on to his short stories. She reads his stories and eventually finds out that the main character, the Secret One, is real. Jake, however, is very elusive about her. No name is given in the stories and she is only referred to as Her, She. The revelation of Jake and the Secret One's relationship gets more complex because of their significant age difference. There are many emotional hot buttons, beyond the ruminations of romantic love and love lost. There are religious issues, but atheists can find inspiration in reading the novel. An untimely death occurs with one of the main characters, but her influence is not cut short by her passing. The demographic of this novel is not limited to romance readers. There is action, mystery, and philosophical debate as well. It is filled with characters that the everyday person can relate, especially the main character, Jake Barker, whose life is filled with apparent loneliness, rejection, and wrestling with the God thing.
