A falling climber's rope snaps thousands of feet above the ground. Two backcountry skiers find themselves buried by an avalanche. Wild winds hurl a paraglider out of control. A daring kayak venture helps an aging legend discover greater health and happiness.

These stories and more come to life in this collection of first-person narratives from rock, snow, ice and whitewater. Thrilling yet thoughtful, the stories explain the athletes' motivations for their ambitious outings and share valuable lessons learned from their experiences.

Royal Robbins, John Bachar, Tommy Caldwell, Lynn Hill, Steve Roper, Peter Croft, Hans Florine and many others share original and little-known tales from America's greatest playground: Yosemite National Park.

Review:

Yosemite Epics reveals death-defying adventures in a place that is known for them. The extreme activities are hair-raising. Some of the descriptions are going to be classics. The book records a great many incidents that are valuable contributions the literature of the Sierra Nevada. --Barry Parr, guidebook author

I really loved reading this book. The stories show you can't anticipate everything Mother Nature will throw at you, no matter how competent or well-prepared you are, but you're only really alive when you test your guts and stamina and expose yourself to some risk. It's fun to read about these kinds of harrowing experiences and even more fun to get them from the horses' mouths. Good stuff. --Suzanne Swedo, backpacking guide
