9780615418711: NeuroGenesis

Gisonne Michaelis, 36th century specialist in group dynamics, organizes and joins a SPEEDship crew charged with two critical missions: test the evolution of the ship's new carbon-based Operating System and transport Diana Allain, heir to the Zalterius II ruling family, to Quivera in a race against time -- literally -- to secure their home world's economic and ecological survival. After launch the crew is horrified to learn that the SPEEDship autopilot has been irreversibly reset, sending them on an endless journey. The OS evolves unexpectedly and reprograms the faster-than-light speedship towards a planet in the distant DeMaiollon system inhabited by Corvi, a sentient and ominous saurian species. The crew struggles to survive, to learn how the Corvi sensed the OS and took their ship, to understand a link between Corvi and humans, and to win a life-or-death battle.

Review:

NeuroGenesis is an excellent piece of hard-core science fiction; imaginative, extrapolative, credible on an exobiological, anthropological, cultural, . . . Hard science level, and characterologically interesting, too . . ..The physics of the interstellar travel is ... Well-worked out ... The AI takes the ship . . . To the planet of the Corvi, a hitherto more or less hidden civilization of sentient avians . . . The manner in which the avian visual sensorium of the Corvi drastically affects their strange consciousness and therefore their civilization is beautifully and masterfully worked out. The human interstellar civilization makes economic and political sense. The deep sociology and psychology is equally cogent, well-detailed and logically puissant, and affects the personalities and consciousness of the characters as it should. for the full review, see Helen Collins' website --Norman Spinrad, Asimov's Science Fiction

Neurogenesis is... fascinating reading. ... Collins's exploration of varieties of intelligence -- human, artificial, animal, or alien--is quite original. Also, as in its predecessor, [Mutagenesis] Collins sets up dramatic tensions to propel the plot along. . . . The weaving of scientific speculation with setting and character is very tight . . . . Like Joan Slonczewski and Mary Rosenblum . . . Collins speculates on how embodiment and environment shape and develop intelligence. --Joan Gordon, The New York Review of Science Fiction
