Co-winner of the 2012 Robert Peterson Award from the Society for American Baseball Research's Negro Leagues Committee, Thou Shalt Not Steal: The Baseball Life and Times of a Rifle-Armed Negro League Catcher is the lively autobiography of Bill "Ready" Cash, a powerhouse catcher for the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro Leagues from 1943 to 1950. Cash had a nasty arm, a potent bat, and a knowledge of the game that would embarrass some of today's major leaguers. Co-authored with award-winning journalist Al Hunter Jr. Thou Shalt Not Steal percolates with the thrills, challenges, heartbreaks, successes, and racism Cash endured in his baseball career -- including stints in Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and Venezuela - and as a black man living in America. And he recalls in painful detail the controversial play at home plate in 1946 involving him, the Newark Eagles' Larry Doby, and a white umpire that nearly started a riot in Ruppert Stadium and probably kept Cash from making it to the majors. "Shoot, as bad as (the umpire's) call was," Cash writes, "I should've stomped him." Funny, charming, poignant, and significantly honest, Thou Shalt Not Steal is as much a history of the game as it is a record of the plight of African Americans in the 20th century.

From the Author:

Bill's life story is an important and colorful patch in the historic quilt of Negro League baseball. But as we worked on his book, I quickly realized his story wasn't merely about his adventures in the field, humorous anecdotes, a list of whom he played with, or his batting averages. His story was also our story, a reflection of the trials African-Americans faced in the 20th century. It was a great way to talk about Negro League history and Bill's role in it, as well as paint a picture, from his perspective and experiences, of how things were during those times, particularly in Philadelphia. This really excited me. Yet, it took 15 years for "Thou Shalt Not Steal" to see the light of day. The hold up? Endless attempts to interest agents and traditional publishers in the book; academic presses that wanted to make it more, well, "academic" in tone;  and, frankly, long bouts of discouragement. But in 2010, inspired by my fiance and encouraged by a few friends, I decided to publish "Thou Shalt Not Steal" myself through Love Eagle Books. But Bill wouldn't live to see his story in print -- he died in September 2011, three months before it came out. I now realize how blessed I was to work with this gifted, God-fearing ball player because "Thou Shalt Not Steal" is more than a book -- it's a legacy.

From the Back Cover:

Thou Shalt Not Steal: The Baseball Life and Times of a Rifle-Armed Negro League Catcher combines the jocular personality and clear memory of Bill "Ready" Cash, former catcher of the Negro League's Philadelphia Stars from 1943 to 1950 and two-time pick for the East-West All-Star Team, with the deft and compelling writing of journalist Al Hunter Jr. As much a chronicle of African-Americans and their role in the evolution of professional sports as it is the gritty, fascinating, and often humorous account of one man's role in this evolution, the book carries readers through decades of social change. Historical, compelling, and thoroughly entertaining, Thou Shalt Not Steal dusts off an imaginary pedestal in the baseball Hall of Fame and places Bill "Ready" Cash squarely on top, where he belongs.

Book Description Love Eagle Books, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Bill Ready Cash, a powerhouse catcher for the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro Leagues from 1943 to 1950, had a nasty arm, a potent bat, and knowledge of the game that would embarrass some of today s major leaguers. That knowledge, along with insights and vignettes rarely, if ever, revealed, spills out of his colorful autobiography, Thou Shalt Not Steal: The Baseball Life and Times of a Rifle-Armed Negro League Catcher, co-authored with award-winning journalist Al Hunter Jr. Thou Shalt Not Steal percolates with the thrills, challenges, heartbreaks, successes, and racism Cash endured in his baseball career -- including stints in Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and Venezuela - and as a black man living in America. And he recalls in painful detail the controversial play at home plate in 1946 involving the Newark Eagles Larry Doby (who later became the first black to play in the American League). That was when Cash, frustrated at the blown call, accidentally smacked the white umpire -- and nearly started a riot in Ruppert Stadium. Some say that play blackballed Cash and kept him from making it to the majors. Shoot, as bad as that call was, Cash writes, I should ve stomped him. Funny, charming, poignant, and significantly honest, Thou Shalt Not Steal is as much a history of the game as it is a record of the plight of African Americans in the 20th century. Where some books about the Negro Leagues take a wide-angle view of the league s history and focus on its superstars, Thou Shalt Not Steal focuses on the experiences of one man - Bill Ready Cash - so the reader develops a deep appreciation not only for Cash, but for the lives of other players, who, like him, were the backbone of the league. Whether it evokes pride or outrage, empathy or profound respect, Thou Shalt Not Steal will fascinate all who open its pages. Sadly Cash, who started his autobiography when he was seventy-nine years old, died Sept. 12, 2011, just three months before it was published. He was ninety-two. Seller Inventory # APC9780615445465
