Synopsis

Everyone wants to run away with the circus.

This is a lively story in which a brave little hero gets to go–and come back. The “circus” is a boat just built in Essex, MA–a real boat, by the way—and Daisy Nell has written a new ballad (included as a CD) that’s just as authentic and plausible as the boat. The language is solid and straightforward; it’s not talking down to kids and it’s not preaching couched in story (two things most of us kids detest)—it’s just a grand little tale, very well illustrated by one who obviously knows boats, and the whole thing is done with great enjoyment and warmth.

About the Author

Daisy Nell is a native of the shipbuilding town of Essex, MA and has been a musician and educator for over 30 years. Daisy and her husband, Capt Stan, are locally grown favorites on Cape Ann, on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Daisy Nell has combined her love of music and familiarity with local folklore for many years, from the farm to the foc's'le. In addition to her many recordings, she is now an author of a children's book, The Stowaway Mouse (Penrose Press, 2011).

From the Inside Flap

The Stowaway Mouse tells the story of a mouse in the shipbuilding town of Essex, Massachusetts, who sneaks onboard as a new schooner is launched at Harold Burnham Boat's yard. Once the mouse leaves his home at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum and heads out to sea, he quickly sees that there is a lot more to shipboard life than he realized. The text follows the spritely song of the same name, recorded by Daisy Nell and the local second graders, on a single CD included with each book.
