With an adult daughter along he describes their trip by train and stage coach, the people they meet, and land formations they pass on their two month vacation. They also traveled with Dr. John Torrey for part of the trip and met with John Muir. Redfield left this journal to his family and it was not transcribed and edited until 2011. Had Redfield lived long enough, this journal may have been included in his Recollections of John Howard Redfield originally published in 1900 and still available.
