The blurred line between fantasy and reality was illustrated in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll tells multiple tales of the protagonist, Alice, meeting fantastic characters and conquering the seemingly impossible. These stories were the inspiration for Twisted Oak. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland offers the groundwork for the fantastic and provocative. Twisted Oak uses Alice as the microcosm, inside the macrocosm of Wonderland, to examine fantasy and reality within the context of human relationship. The first and last poems in this collection are the rabbit hole, a symbol of how cyclical it is to enter and exit reality in the same place. The poems in between loosely follow the American adaptation and highlight the shadow side of Wonderland.
