Bombs, Bees and Apple Trees is a memoir, a look back through the eyes of a very experienced psychiatrist, a gifted psychotherapist, bringing these special skils to examine not the life of another, but his own growth and development as a son, a student, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a physician's physician, a hospital-based leader and a participant in the current national debate about health care access, cost, and quality, especially as it affects the emotionally troubled and depressed. It is, if you read it carefully and wonder a bit between the lines, an in-depth attempt to understand why and how a life developed the way it did. It is unusual, but refreshing, to see such honest, skilled introspection. There is much to learn in this memoir. It beautifully defines the difference between the many who are but doctors of medicine, and the few who are true physicians. Bombs, Bees and Apple Trees is a book that you will go back and read at least twice. --Peter J. Deckers, MD, Professor of Surgery, Dean Emeritus, University of Connecticut School of Medicine
