A spiritual Master's challenge is to awaken the devotee from the dream of the relative world. One Guru's methods are revealed in The Standing Stone: The Challenge of the Master. Although written as a novel, all of the events described here are true. Falling head over heels in love with a man while traveling with her Guru, a young devotee is surprised to discover that through the trials and tribulations of this relationship, the Guru finds ways to help her gain amazing spiritual insights.
This profound love story, recounted as a conversation between the devotee and a fictional narrator, explores the intriguing link between metaphysics and geophysics, offering a scientific look at the mysticism of the standing stones which play a significant role in the romance. The Guru teaches that a life disconnected from the divine is like fiction, missing what is "Real." The Standing Stone: The Challenge of the Master is about finding the "Real," that realm beyond the ego and the thinking mind. It is within that realm that the sense of disillusionment about life's purpose vanishes, for it is there that the oneness with the divine is felt.

Margaret Dillsaver’s introduction to her Guru, Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D. (known later in his life as Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati), founder of Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York, was at age seven when her mother first read to her from his book, Fundamentals of Yoga. To her young mind, “Dr. Mishra” had the answer to any and all problems. Given her serious nature, however, examination of the deep existential questions of life led her into depression when she was seventeen years old. Fortunately, her mother decided the best solution was to drop her off at the ashram, in hopes she would find relief from her malaise. She thus met her Guru in 1974 and the course of her life changed forever. At first a frequent visitor to the ashram, she moved there in 1985 and was very lucky to have an intense period of study with him before his passing in 1993. She continues to live and work at the ashram.
