Emily Bengels grew up in Long Island with her three sisters and her passionately imaginative parents. A musician and language lover, she became a teacher of Gifted and Talented students in Central New Jersey, where she currently resides with her cats. Her first poetry teacher was her mother, an English professor at Hofstra University, but she was equally inspired by her father’s use of Lewis Carroll in winning law cases. She feels lucky to have been a child in Susan Astor’s Poets in the Schools classes, and Denise Lowe’s summer poetry workshops at the Museum of Natural History in Lawrence, Kansas. For years after these courses, Emily kept writing quietly, for herself, and recently began attending Murphy Writing Workshops where she continues to grow as a poet and a human being.
