9780615829937: Dardashti

A spellbinding story of Jewish life in the ghettos of Esfahan, Iran during the 19th and 20th centuries, and their journey from the depth of poverty, discrimination, illiteracy, sickness and famine to the sweet pinnacle of success in the United States. A true account of love, hate, adultery, family feuds, murder and finally the Jews shedding their shackles of prejudice beginning in the early 20th century. Nematollah Shakib takes the reader through the history of Iran transitioning from corrupt dictatorial kings of the Qajar Dynasty to some semblance of constitutional government and ending in a secular government during the Pahlavi Dynasty. This resulted in the minorities to excel to wealth and prominence. The author published several books in Farsi in Iran. He completed this book at the time of the 1979 Revolution in Iran. He continually published articles in Iranian magazines in print outside of Iran until his death in 1993. His writings included politics, social issues, history and discussions regarding the Torah.

About the Author:

Nematollah Shakib was born in Juybareh, a Jewish ghetto in Esfahan, Iran. As a self-educated author, he pulled himself out of the poverty and harsh world of the ghetto to high level positions in the National Iranian Oil Company. He immigrated to the United States after his children completed their education in the United States. That is when he began writing books and articles for magazines. It took him many years to write this book in Farsi. His oldest son, Iraj David Shakib, an engineer by trade, translated this book to English to ensure that future generations would have an understanding of life as a Jew in the 19th and 20th centuries in Iran.
