9780615834214: Blogging Kansas: Musings From The Land of Oz (The GYPSY's Blogging Book Series) (Volume 1)

The first book from International Award Winning Artist J. A. George AKA; The GYPSY. BLOGGING KANSAS is a collection of original essays written by The GYPSY and derived from his numerous and most popular Blogs with one central theme; Kansas. Loaded with original art and photographs by The GYPSY that inspired a majority of his writings you will find this book of opinions, short stories and poetry hard to put down. A very revealing look into the heart and mind of a Tattoo Artist, Biker, Adventurer, Entrepreneur and a True Renaissance Man. Earnest, poignant and oft times humorous you will find plenty of laughter, tears and thought-provoking food for the soul. Excerpt From The Story "A Debt Repaid and A Blizzard Endured": I watched the tornado cross the Interstate less than a half mile from where I sat under an overpass. It was early May of 1982 and this was just another moment in a trip, by the time it was completed, that included, a trip on Braniff airlines last flight during a thunderstorm, hot sex in a wet tent, good times with old friends, a flood, a night spent in a bathroom of a turnpike rest area and running out of gas less than 20 miles from home. We won't even mention the loss of my headlight, the loss of oil due to an over-enthusiastic service station attendant and dining on gnats washed down with a tasty glass of Texas ground water. No, we won't mention those things because they are another story entirely and will reveal themselves as a chapter in my upcoming book. The story that I am going to relate here today deals with the tornado, (previously mentioned), lost keys, a fried generator and a long overdo debt repaid. Excerpt From The Story "A Love Story": I held a single red rose in my hand to greet her with. As she approached her smile widened and she grabbed the sides of her long leather coat. With a mischievous tilt of her head she pulled her coat open like a flasher in the park. Except instead of bare flesh she revealed a black t-shirt with bold white letters that proclaimed, “REMEMBER MY NAME YOU’LL BE SCREAMING IT LATER.” The shirt proved to be prophetic. Excerpt From The Story "The Night Santa Saved Christmas": The wind rustled the plastic on the windows at 433 East High popping the artificial storm windows in and out like the breathing of some transparent rectangular monster trapped within the window frame. This was made even more unsettling by the fact that the plastic adorned the windows on the inside of the house and not the outside. Jimmy and Patty sat on the couch, a blanket wrapped around their bodies to insulate them from the cold. The floor heater cracked and groaned but did little good to chase off the cold in the drafty un-insulated little house on Topeka’s east side. Jimmy and Patty watched the old GE black and white TV reflect back images of Bing Crosby as he, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen and Danny Kaye sang about a White Christmas. Jimmy looked over at the little tree in the corner, the red, green and gold bubble lights sending their tiny endless stream of bubbles up the tubes to go nowhere and disappear in the glass tip of the cylinder. He then looked back at the black and white image of the tree behind the four singers and though their tree was gray within the flickering image Jimmy knew it was a grander tree than he would ever have.

About the Author:

The GYPSY was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1956. He exhibited his artistic talent at 18 months old when he drew a picture of a cow on the inside cover of a coloring book. He never had another color book after that time. His Mother, recognizing his natural talent, kept him well supplied in crayons and newsprint paper. At 6 years of age he was enrolled in art classes at Washburn University where he soon out surpassed the other students in his class. His instructors moved him quickly from beginner to intermediate classes and soon into an advanced adult class where he was discovered by famed portrait artist Harry Roth who gave him private lessons for the next 3 years. In 1964 The GYPSY won a City wide art contest with a crayon and water color drawing of a space walk. This picture went on to win first place for his age group in State competition and later in National. It remained on display at the Smithsonian Institution from 1964 - 1965. It resides in the museum archives. When The GYPSY graduated from High School he was called for an interview with a major greeting card company. Turning down the contract that the company offered The GYPSY stopped by a tattoo studio on his way back home and he was hooked. He started his 18 month apprenticeship the next day and the rest is history. The GYPSY had the first professional Tattoo Studio in St. Joseph, Missouri which opened in 1977. He has also had studios in San Angelo, Midland, El Paso and Abilene, Texas. All except El Paso being the first of their kind in those cities. The GYPSY is one of only 27 people worldwide certified as a Master Tattoo Artist. He has won World wide recognition and numerous awards for his artwork as well as being involved in community affairs and civic organizations. The GYPSY is the first tattoo artist to ever run for a Political office campaigning for a City Council seat in Baxter Springs, Kansas and as a Candidate for the District 12 House seat for the Kansas House. He also served as the Governor Appointed Body Art Rep. on the Kansas State Licensing Board. In August 2010 The GYPSY retired from the Body Art Industry. But you can't keep a good Tattoo Artist down and in October 2012 The GYPSY opened a new studio in Eula, Texas where he Tattoos, gives Art Lessons, Writes and maintains several Web and Blog sites. The GYPSY has 1 Daughter, 4 Sons and 2 Granddaughters. He Married Debbie George on July 4th, 1998 whom he met online in 1997. Along with his wife Debbie he now calls Clyde, Texas home.
