Swinging has a dark, undisclosed cost. Calista, a self-centered and successful business woman, is guided to a Roman artifact associated with ancient Bacchanalian cults and sensing the panacea to her marital boredom, manipulates her husband and friends into elaborate spouse-swapping parties. A gnawing need for new experience is met when Calista visits an antique market where she meets a mysterious associate professor who urges her to purchase a ring like object that was the symbol of an obscure Roman sex cult. Overcome by a feverish desire for unbridled sexual liberation, Calista plants the idea in her husband and friends who believe she is joking. She lures them to a lavish hotel party and after saturating them with alcohol, proposes a night of spouse swapping. Each guest, confronted by the force of lust and group pressure agrees. After the hangover, two of the couples resolve to work out their marital discord and forget about the night. Calista, exhilarated by her success, acts on the professor’s advice and tricks the group into a second, more escalated encounter. The others soon realize that they are in thrall to her whims and demand the establishment of rules. Calista consistently looks for a greater rush to replace the first thrill and to demonstrate her control over the group. She deliberately breaks the rules, leading to a spiral of jealousy, and betrayal that leaves no one unscathed.
