NOTE FROM SUZANNE: LOVE IN A TIME OF WAR is a romantic re-imagining of my first novel, MRS. TUESDAY'S DEPARTURE.

  • This means 3/4ths of Love is IDENTICAL to Mrs. Tuesday's Departure....with one BIG difference...the final quarter of the book contains new scenes and a completely new ending!

How did this happen? LOVE IN A TIME OF WAR had a strange road to its creation. In September, I was working with an editor to complete a revision of my first novel, Mrs. Tuesday's Departure. After we'd finished, my editor and I began talking about Natalie's choices in the book, and what would have happened if she'd given herself a chance to fall in love again. From there, I began writing, making changes to the manuscripts until Natalie found the love she believed was gone forever. Love in a Time of War is that story.  LOVE as the title suggests contains both a romance and the happy ending that readers told me they wanted. It is with great happiness that I am able to provide both in this story.
In this emotionally powerful WWII drama, children's book writer Natalie Lucas looks to her faith in God to help her beloved Jewish niece Mila escape the approaching Nazi menace in Hungary.

Natalie's twin sister, the celebrated poet and professor, Anna Lucas, has succumbed to early-onset dementia, making the situation even more unstable for Natalie and Mila.

Natalie and Anna's personal and professional relationship provides an interesting subplot whch focuses on the foundations of sisterly love.

Meanwhile, surrounded by violence and the threat of capture, Natalie must find a safe way out of the country for Mila. She eventually turns to her teenage sweetheart, Deszo, a Professor whom she rejected in order to marry her first love, Max.

The past love triangle between Deszo, Natalie and Anna adds further complications; however, Deszo may provide Mila with her only chance of escape. As Natalie and Deszo are thrown together by their mission to save Mila, their love for one another is re-ignighted.

After the Nazis learn of Deszo's assistance to the Jews, he and Natalie are brutally interrogated by a Nazi officer who has been following their activities, and their lives are in danger. After many doubts as to who in their community is friend or foe, the novel culminates with a heart-wrenching conclusion which provokes questions of loyalty, family and above all--faith.

Author's Note: Love in a Time of War is a re-telling of Mrs. Tuesday's Departure, my first novel.

From the Author:

1) How many drafts did you have to write for this book?
LOVE IN A TIME OF WAR had a strange road to its creation. In September, I was working with an editor to complete a revision of my first novel, Mrs. Tuesday's Departure. After we'd finished, my editor and I began talking about Natalie's choices in the book, and what would have happened if she'd given herself a chance to fall in love again.
From there, I began writing, making changes to the manuscripts until Natalie found the love she believed was gone forever. Love in a Time of War is that story. I guess you'd say that this book has had both many drafts, and just one!
2) This would make a great film. Any talks of turning your book into a movie?
Not yet...but it would make a great film. I often imagine how it would play out in film form. World War Two films are so compelling because they show the human spirit at its best and worst.
3) If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would it be?
There is a very important dinner scene in the book between Natalie, Deszo, and Gunter. I would love to be a guest at that dinner. That was a pivotal scene in the story and the atmosphere was both beautiful and breathtaking.
4) What scene or bit of dialogue in the book are you most proud of and why?
When I created the new ending for LOVE IN A TIME OF WAR, I had to write a children's poem from Natalie to Mila. It is a charming and bittersweet poem that I hope conveys dearly Natalie thought of Mila as her own daughter.
5) What's up next for you?
I have two new novels coming out in 2014....
The first novel is set in Paris and asks the question: What would you do if you had one week to live?
The second novel is a murder mystery set in Moscow and reflects my years of living overseas.

Review:

  • This had a twist that I didn't see coming and that made it even better in my book! I'll definite watch for more books by this author.
  • This was a first person account, which had me sitting on the edge of my seat at times...
  • Such an emotional story.Gripping from the start. Loved the honesty, the betrail and the way the story transcends generations to tell the story.
  • A fabulous historical World War 2 novel set in Hungary.
