This book began at the side of the man long called The World's Greatest Architect, and now our first green and ecological architect. Having been privileged to serve as Wright's youngest apprentice, Vernon Swaback combines that experience with his life-long work and study, integrating everything from history, economics, and science, to the arts, technology and religion.
If a man born just two years after the civil war could so inspire and maintain the world's interest in his approach, imagine what the insights and technologies of the 21st Century could make possible if, in a Frank Lloyd Wright manner, they could be artfully integrated into a more beautiful and enriching way of life. While the world's museums and galleries celebrate the special achievements of design, the time has come to turn how we live into our greatest works of art. Not only is this possible, there is no longer any other sustainable option. Frank Lloyd Wright's Unfinished Work is about living at a time of urgent joy. Urgent because we are unwittingly attacking the very essence of our own existence. Joyful because we are on the verge of becoming co-creators with the nature of life itself, all of which depends on broadening our appreciation for the holistic power of design.

The comprehensive reach of this amazing book, is made ever more significant because it comes from a producing architect and planner who has been uncommonly effective within the opportunities and constraints of the here and now. This is the latest in a series that Vern Swaback has written and published over a very long and creative career. Each publication has had a message much like the one embedded in these pages: Community matters...Design matters...Here s how. --Jeff Stein, AIA is an Architect, writer, educator and president of Cosanti Foundation, the urban research organization founded by Paolo Soleri. He teaches and lectures worldwide and was formerly Dean of the Boston Architectural College.
Vernon Swaback has an impressive record of pioneering thought, recorded in his elegant prose. Frank Lloyd Wright s Unfinished Work shatters that record. It is at once delightful and terrifying, full of both the hope and horror of which man is capable. The grace of its pages lies in the willingness to confront all of this with a tangible plan, the basis of which is grand and enlightened design. --Maria Baier is CEO of the Sonoran Institute, past Arizona State Land Commissioner and member of the executive staff of the Office of the Governor serving two administrations.
Vern Swaback epitomizes the indefatigable student of history and a chronicler of contemporary events. He gathers wisdom and inspiration from a host of disciplines and in the process reminds us of our potential to design the world we would wish to inhabit in the present and leave for generations to follow. With this volume, he has built a sturdy foundation upon which to build the future he so clearly sees, a vision that is generously conceived and presented. --Wellington (Duke) Reiter, FAIA is Senior Vice President of the Arizona Sate University Foundation, past President of the Art Institute of Chicago, former Dean of the College of Design at ASU and faculty in the MIT Department of Architecture.
