9780618088034: What Will You Be for Halloween?

What will you be for Halloween? Mark Todd answers that perennial question with eleven clever poems and illustrations.

A mysterious mummy, groaning and moaning, bandaged from head to toe.
What he looks like, only his mummy knows.

A witch? A werewolf? A pirate? A mummy? The perfect book for any child who’s trying to figure out what to dress up as for Halloween night.

About the Author:

Like many kids raised in the 70's, Mark was influenced at an early age by Star Wars and comic books. Unlike many kids, he grew up just a few miles from the Vegas strip, its neon and glitz looming over the city. He graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and currently lives and works in the Los Angeles area with his wife, artist Esther Pearl Watson, their daughter Lili and Mr. Pickles, a lovely French Bulldog.

From School Library Journal:

K-Gr 3-A lighthearted look at the less scary aspects of Halloween. Rhyming text on each page gives an abbreviated description of each costume children try on in preparation for a party. While the disguises chosen are all traditional (Frankenstein, vampire, werewolf), youngsters are shown creating them out of items from their own cupboards and toy boxes. The acrylic paintings show characters excited and smiling beneath their costumes, taking some of the fright out of the fangs and claws prominently displayed. The text, however, is distracting-the poems about each outfit do not follow a regular rhythm, making them difficult to read aloud. Lines fall in unexpected pairings, so it is hard to anticipate where the emphasis should be. Spare text means that information and contextual clues are omitted, leaving adults to explain the binary code of a robot, or why vampires shy away from garlic. While the concept and illustrations would appeal to a librarian searching for a Halloween storytime, the text does not succeed. Try Anne Rockwell's Halloween Day (HarperCollins, 1997) for a more energizing treatment.
