Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed. From Publishers Weekly:
H.A. Rey's Curious George stars in four board books that incorporate Rey's classic artwork. In Curious George One to Ten and Back Again, youngsters count along with "1 curious monkey" as he points out "2 dinosaurs," "3 tasty donuts" and up to "10 paper boats" before counting down again. Curious George Rides charts the fellow's favorite ways to travel, from bike to subway to bus top. In Curious George Goes Fishing and Curious George and the Rocket, George goes on two adventures. In the first, adapted from Curious George Flies a Kite, he tries to catch a fish using cake as bait; in the second, based on Curious George Gets a Medal, he heads into space. "Five-four-three-two-one-BLAST OFF!" A turn of the page and book reveals a vertical spread of the action.
