This volume is the first to address Foucault's influence and thepotential of his work in the understanding and the writing ofhistory. It does so critically and accessibly.
Scholars from the United States, France and Italy, includinghistorians, sociologists, an anthropogist and a philosopher, rangeover Foucault's writing - on love and the family in classicalantiquity, the constitution of the self, the history of science andsexuality, to the origins of the liberal state. But, true to itssubject, this book does not conceive of history divorced fromphilosophy: it explores how Foucault's understanding of the pastrelates to his ideas of truth, ethics, knowledge and action.All-in-all, the book offers a series of mind-opening perspectiveson Foucault's work, on the past, and on the present.

From the Back Cover:

Michel Foucault is perhaps the most mysterious and certainly amongthe most influential of twentieth-century thinkers. Although hetrained as a philosopher, his writings were almost entirely in thedomain of history: fields he sought to combine and, in every sense,to "de-discipline". Yet Foucault's readers have consistentlysingled out his philosophy for intensive discussion. This volume isthe first to address his influence and the potential of his work inthe understanding and the writing of history. It does so criticallyand accessibly.
Scholars from the United States, France and Italy, includinghistorians, sociologists, an anthropologist and a philosopher, range over the full complement of Foucault's writing - on eros andthe family in classical antiquity, the constitution of the self, the history of science and sexuality, and the origins of theliberal state. But, true to its subject, this book does notconceive of history divorced from philosophy: it explores howFoucault's understanding of the past relates to his ideas of truth, ethics, knowledge and action, and seeks above all to explain and toassess the subversive and liberating value of, and the possibledistortions inherent in, Foucault's notion of "genealogy", hissubstitute for history in its traditional guise.
The authors examine and explicate Foucault's writings, and applythem to the interpretation of different cultures - to the nature, for instance, of desire and sexual identity in late antiquity - andof events, to adopting a Foucauldian perspective to arrive atradically different interpretations of the French Revolution.Others question Foucault's factual selectivity or economy with thetruth - in relation, for example, to homosexuality among theRomans. All in all, however, the book offers a series ofmind-opening perspectives on Foucault's work, on the past - and onthe present.

About the Author:

Jan Goldstein is Professor of Modern European History at the University of Chicago where she is also a member of the committee on the conceptual foundations of science.
