From the Back Cover:

The new edition of Endurance in Sport has been thoroughly revised to take into account recent developments in the field. It covers all aspects of this major component of sports science, as well as embracing medical and sport-specific issues of particular relevance to all interested in endurance performance.

The scientific basis and mechanisms of endurance - physiological, psychological, genetic and environmental - are all considered in depth. Measurement of endurance is extensively reviewed, as is preparation and training for physical activities requiring endurance.

The information presented will be of interest to a wide range of specialists, sports medicine doctors, medical doctors in family practice, physical therapists, athletic trainers and coaches, and graduate students in the sports sciences and health-related professionals.

From The New England Journal of Medicine:

The Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Fortius" ("swifter, higher, stronger"), has pushed many athletes to the limits of human endurance. When the 40,000-m Olympic marathon was run in 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds in 1896, who could have imagined that a 42,195-m marathon would be run in a record-setting time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 42 seconds in Chicago in 1999? In 1932, the winning time for the 50-km walk was 4 hours, 50 minutes, and 10 seconds. In 2000, the race was won in 3 hours, 42 minutes, and 22 seconds.

These dramatic improvements in human performance have not come easily. Gains have been the result of optimizing every aspect of training for each sport: the selection of athletes, physical conditioning, psychological conditioning, nutrition, ergogenic aids (that is, performance-enhancing substances), techniques, equipment, and technology. Negative outcomes have also resulted as athletes have pushed themselves beyond the limits of endurance. These have included overuse injuries and other forms of stress failure, altered physiologic function, and even death.

The rapid growth of ergogenic aids since the 1960s has caused sports organizers to develop regulations and testing procedures to detect participants who try to gain an unfair advantage. This testing has led to a new type of competition. At each Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission tests athletes for the use of illicit substances. When newly developed ergogenic aids are detected, they are banned from the next competition. By then, athletes are often taking something new. Thus, the athletes who choose to take banned substances try to stay one quadrennium ahead of drug-use ("doping") control.

Since it was formed in 1896, the IOC has been a catalyst for the continued improvement of human performance and has fostered advances in all aspects of sports science. Through its Medical Commission, the IOC has published nine volumes of the Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine. Volume II of this encyclopedia is Endurance in Sport, the first edition of which was published in 1992; the current edition is the second. For the purposes of this volume, the editors have defined an endurance sport as one in which the competition itself or the associated training lasts for one hour or longer. The editors state that they were intrigued by the ultimate challenge that prolonged international competition presents to the body systems that regulate physiological, biochemical, biomechanical, and psychological variables.

Endurance in Sport was written for almost anyone who has some scientific background and who deals with athletes engaged in endurance sports. Its readership may include sports scientists, doctors, athletic trainers, coaches, graduate students, and athletes themselves. The section that deals with the biologic basis of endurance performance was written for the sports physiologist. The exercise physiology of the various organ systems is well covered. The sports scientist in a broader sense will benefit from the section on methods of measuring the various determinants of endurance performance. The coach or trainer will learn from the chapters that deal with the principles of preparation for various types of endurance competition; among the topics covered are conditioning, food, fluids, hemoglobin level, blood volume, smoking, alcohol use, and drug use. Environmental aspects of endurance training, especially chronobiology, are important. For example, a coach taking his team from the East Coast to a competition in Denver will have to cope not only with a time change but with high altitude as well. There are also chapters that deal with genetic determinants of and physical limitations to endurance performance.

The chapters that focus on clinical aspects of endurance training are intended for medical doctors but can be understood by others. Topics in these chapters include medical surveillance, cardiovascular benefits and risks, changes in reproductive function, and the immune response. Other medical subjects include preparticipation screening, applied physiology, and overuse injuries. Issues relevant to specific population groups -- children, women, pregnant women, elderly persons, and disabled persons -- are also discussed. A section devoted to psychological preparation for endurance performance is geared to the sports psychologist. There are chapters on the "personality structure" of the endurance athlete and on the perception of effort during endurance training and performance.

If the athlete has sufficient scientific knowledge and interest, he or she will benefit from the entire book, which covers essentially every important aspect of training for endurance sports. Individual sports discussed in detail are running, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing, cycling, the triathlon, canoeing, soccer, mountaineering, and human-powered flight. What is unique about this book is that it is truly international in scope. The IOC Medical Commission has assembled contributions from 87 experts from 14 countries to make up this encyclopedia. It would be hard for any group other than the IOC to gather so much expertise into one volume, as they have done here.

Although this book is billed as an encyclopedia, the information presented is not arranged alphabetically. Instead, it reads as a textbook. However, the book is comprehensive in scope and hence meets the criterion for an encyclopedia.

Knowledge of how to maximize the function of human regulatory mechanisms during prolonged exercise and of how to optimize other aspects of performance in each sport is the key to faster, higher, and stronger performance. This encyclopedia will help athletes and those who help them prepare for the endurance that is required.
