9780643062573: Life of Marsupials

Joint winner of the 2005 Whitley Medal.

Included in Choice Magazine's 2006 Outstanding Academic Titles list.

Over the past half a century research has revealed that marsupials – far from being ‘second class’ mammals – have adaptations for particular ways of life quite equal to their placental counterparts. Despite long separate evolution, there are extraordinary similarities in which marsupials have solved the challenges of living in such environments as deserts, alpine snowfields or tropical rainforests. Some can live on grass, some on pollen and others on leaves; some can glide, some can swim and others hop with extraordinary efficiency.

In Life of Marsupials, one of the world’s leading experts explores the biology and evolution of this unusual group – with their extraordinary diversity of forms around the world – in Australia, New Guinea and South America.

This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. With stunning insights, Life of Marsupials explores this unusual group of mammals, covering the extraordinary diversity of forms around the world, in Australia, New Guinea and the Americas. The author s original text, Life of Marsupials, which was published in 1973, was the first student textbook on marsupials. In this completely re-written edition, he brings a lifetime s experience and masterly insights into the lives of these fascinating mammals. Despite separate evolution there are extraordinary similarities in which marsupials have solved the challenges of living in environments such as deserts, alpine snowfields and tropical rainforests. However, this book also looks at their differences: how some can live on grass and others on leaves; and how some can glide, some can swim and others can hop with extraordinary efficiency. With stunning colour photography of 39 species the book include topics such as: What makes a marsupial? Reproduction and development; Opossums of America: cousins from a distant time; Carnivorous marsupials: bright-eyed killers of the night; Bandicoots: fast-living opportunists; Pygmy possums and sugar gliders; Life in the trees: koala, greater glider and possums; Wombats: vegetarians of the underworld; Kangaroos: consummate herbivores; Marsupials and people; Written by a leading expert on marsupial biology, Life of Marsupials will be of keen interest to zoologists, mammalogists, wildlife researchers and natural historians.
