Synopsis

Excerpt from The Determination of the Magnetic Induction in Straight Bars

In order that there shall be no magnetic leaking anywhere in the rod, it is necessary that the magnetic potential of the rod be everywhere the same. That is, that in the infinite rod the rise of magnetic potential in each element of length due to the cur rent must be exactly equal to the fall of magnetic potential in that element due to the reluctance of the iron. If the iron is Of uniform permeability and constant cross section, and the ampere turns on the solenoid be uniform throughout the length, then the rod will be of uniform magnetic potential.
