Synopsis
This book by the author is a sociological research report on the state of New York's legislation and sociocultural climate in 1837. The book explores the decision-making process and reports of a legislative committee responsible for investigating the distribution of increased capital stock in the Jefferson County Bank. The author includes in the report copies of relevant documents and communications acquired throughout the investigation. The book presents the findings of severe corruption found among most of the bank's commissioners, reflected in the private and secret dealings with bank insiders for self-serving outcomes, which prevented fair and just distribution of investment opportunities. The book provides an in-depth view of the greed-first attitudes among a significant portion of the elite in 1837 New York, as well as the government's slow but ultimately impartial response.
