This book examines the world of the road hustler, a confidence man whose specialty is the manipulation of card and dice games. In developing the material on card and dice hustlers, we have attempted to do several things.
First, we wanted to provide an intimate view of the world of card and dice hustling; it's a hard, fast, and, by conventional standards, a very exotic life. We did not, however, simply want to provide a journalistic account of road hustling. We view this book as an opportunity to present some interesting material with important implications: for studying deviance involvement processes and career contingencies; for understanding the operations of hustlers, professional thieves, and confidence men; and of learning more about the social psychology of impression management, deception, and credibility.
