With Australia's bicentennial coming up in 1988, we can expect an increased interest in that nation, and a spate of books to fill it. This one is a good choice for public and academic libraries. The author is an English journalist who spent several months traveling counter-clockwise around the country (the title is a reference to the fact that most of the settlement is on or near the coast). She visited cities, mining camps, ranches, and resorts, and talked with a wide variety of people about topics of Australian concern: aborigines, immigrants, unions, trade, politics, and culture. While the book is a personal and impressionistic account, it is also even-handed and balanced. The only fault is that the map fails to locate all the places about which she writes.Harold M.
