Reviews

K-Gr 2-- This Japanese import plunges readers right into one of childhood's greatest fears: that of being lost. When mother leaves on an errand, young Anna, first introduced in Anna's Secret Friend (1987) and Anna's Special Present (1988, both Viking), is left in charge. Her little sister Katy is asleep in the house. Katy awakens and Anna takes her outside to play, but when Anna becomes engrossed in a sidewalk drawing, Katy wanders off. Anna, fear-stricken, rushes about the streets looking for Katy. At last she is found, safe and happy, playing in the sand in the park. Hayashi's street scenes are soft and subdued, and her rosy-cheeked, delicate children quite beautiful, but she still conveys the drama and tension inherent in the story: a child is lost, the city looms large, and Anna is frantic with worry. Adult readers are certain to question this mother's wisdom in leaving a young child in charge of a toddler, and to wish that Anna had asked for adult help. However, young readers will identify with Anna's predicament and her fear for Katy's safety. This fear is real, but ``once removed,'' as it is not the heroine who is in danger. When Anna uses her wits to find Katy, readers will experience a sense of strength and control in the face of danger. This suspenseful story, although too powerful for a preschool story time, will keep older picture-book readers breathless. --Gail C. Ross, Baltimore County Public Library
