9780670819256: The Art Atlas of Britain and Ireland: In Association with the National Trust

From royal castles to private houses, Britain and Ireland have a rich national heritage of fine art collections. This is a directory of that heritage, and with maps and historical analysis it locates every significant collection open to the public. The diversity of the collection is enormous, ranging from the Royal collection at Windsor Castle to the Stanley Spencer museum, housed in the austere chapel at Cookham. The atlas describes how these individual collections were assembled, adding a wealth of detail about the eccentric mania for collecting which has resulted in a national fine art inheritance. Colour maps show where the collections are to be found, followed by a brief outline of the major works of art that can be seen by the public in over 600 places.

From Library Journal:

National Trust publications are generally sturdy information sources, and Arnold's compilation is no exception. It satisfies both reference book and armchair reading requirements. While not a comprehensive survey of art available to the public--some private institutions declined coverage for security reasons, and places of worship with artworks were not included--this book offers geographically organized coverage that is extensive and pertinent. The three principal "national" museum collections are treated together before the book is divided into regional sections. Entries on individual museums, galleries, and houses contain historical summaries and concise descriptions of holdings. Major works are usually reproduced as illustrations. One truly sumptuous feature of this work is that all reproductions are in good quality color. An excellent purchase for public libraries and most academic collections.
