Grade 3-6-- This superb collection of poems is as varied as it is delightful. The illustrations, rendered in watercolor, ink, and linoleum-block printing, are so different from one another, and so right for each individual poem, that it's hard to believe they were all done by the same artist. Like the poems they illustrate, they are humorous, pensive, dreamlike and playful, soft and bold. People of many races and both genders are depicted in active roles. The collection includes works by and about native Americans, and about Canada, where Booth and Denton both live and where the collection was first published. Other poems refer to subjects as diverse and universal as the seasons, laughter, dinosaurs, nature, and licorice. Some of the poems demand to be read aloud as much as others need to be seen on the page. Like Sing a Song of Popcorn , (Scholastic, 1988) and other fine poetry collections, this may inspire the young to write some poetry of their own. Most of the poems are reprinted from sources that are out of print or difficult to find elsewhere. --Anne Price, Ann Mersereau School, Bronx, NY
