Captioned illustrations with some movable parts depict the formation of volcanoes, the measurement of earthquakes, the mechanics of plate tectonics, and more.

Grade 4 Up-- Beginning with the pop-up representation of two types of volcanic action, this book proceeds through other spectacular earth movements, earthquakes, continental drift and plate tectonics, to structural geology and earth dynamics. The legends that accompany the moving-paper eruptions, lava flows, and quaking ground are quite technical and in small print. Problems with translation are minor, but the incorrect usage of "tidal wave" and "ash" should be noted. Not all volcanoes are cone-shaped, and it is overly dramatic to state that "an earthquake strikes . . . houses tumble." Also the brief but technical captions for the pop-ups and paper engineering will require supplemental geology texts to answer questions that are bound to arise. It is evident that the subject is much more complex, however suitable the depiction of the included activities may be. In trying to picture a use for such a book, one imagines a teacher surrounded by children who watch as the various levers, windows, and tabs are manipulated to show the drift of continental plates from the Pangaea base to our present formation of land above the ocean level. --Elizabeth Morrissett, Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage
