When Rosy's mother buys her a pool, everyone in the neighborhood enjoys swimming in it, including the twins, the dogs, and the birds

From Publishers Weekly:

Wearing a chic floral-print hat, Rosy reaches into her mother's shopping bag to find a new inflatable wading pool. With help from mother and Sam, her eager older brother, the toddler inflates her new plaything. (Her repetition of "Rosy do it" is an amusing touch, and one that children and their parents can easily relate to.) Once the pool is filled with water, Rosy and her two friends climb in, and Sam sprays them with water from the hose. When the children are called in for supper, Rosy's dogs--and eventually several birds--have a chance to splash in the new pool. In Dickens's first picture book, it is not this somewhat thin story line that captures the attention. Rather, her background as a fashion illustrator is pleasingly evidenced by the strikingly slapdash paintings that fairly glow with light. With their sketchy outlines and splashes of vibrant color, these characters are smartly suited indeed. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-- A very simple story that conveys the excitement of a toddler's experience with her first wading pool. Written in a beginning-reader style, it has short sentences with repeated patterns for ease in word recognition. One, two, or three-word phrases constitute much of Rosy's dialogue. Unfortunately, the text isn't very interesting. The enjoyment comes from the wonderful free-flowing, outline-type illustrations that bleed to the edge of the page. Vibrant scenes burst open on each spread; each is busy with details children will love. Watercolor washes create soft, shadowy effects; large close-up perspectives take up most of each oversized, attractive page. Even with the uninspired language, the book works for its intended audience because the art adds the necessary pizazz. --Judith A. Galganski, Reinstein Memorial Library, Cheektowaga, NY
