About the Author

John Harvey is the author of the richly-praised sequence of ten Charlie Resnick novels, the first of which, Lonely Hearts, was named by The Times as one of the ‘100 Best Crime Novels of the Century.’ In 2004, William Heinemann published Flesh and Blood, the first novel featuring retired Detective Inspector Frank Elder. He is also a poet, dramatist and occasional broadcaster.

From AudioFile

Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick likes his job, is good at it, and has learned to adapt to the divorced life with four cats. Suddenly, a parole hearing takes him back 10 years to the time he put a deranged criminal away and lost his wife to his grueling work schedule. Jonathan Oliver offers up the dry personalities of the Manchester detective bureau and assorted criminals with appropriate amounts of male introspection. Surprisingly, he doesn't soften his voice at all for the female characters, using his interpretation of dialogue to carry their personalities. It works, without the distraction of effeminacy. While the plot may become confusing from time to time, the vocalizations never do, even before speakers are identified.
