From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-An engaging story about a small rabbit that has been invited to his very first birthday party. Through picture and language, the author captures the anticipation, preparations, anxiety ("What if I don't know anyone?/What if I don't like the food?/What if I want to go home?"), and initial shyness at the actual event. Youngsters will identify with Tiny Rabbit, who eventually joins the games and helps Blue Mouse blow out the candles on the birthday cake. Once home, an enthusiastic Tiny Rabbit begins to plan his own party, which is only a month away. The watercolor illustrations, rendered with a childlike simplicity, are surrounded by plenty of white space. Pictures of the little fellow trying on his "Bat bunny" outfit, tangled in wrapping tape, and dancing at the party add humor while they gently and effectively carry the story along. Pair this with Pat Hutchins's Titch and Daisy (Greenwillow, 1996) or Emily Arnold McCully's Speak up, Blanche! (HarperCollins, 1991) for storytime fun.

From Publishers Weekly:

A young rabbit receives his first invitation to a birthday party in Wallace's (Little Bean) amiable tale. After phoning Pig "to find out what happened at parties," the bunny models several costumes as he considers what to wear and frets about the "perfect present" (he opts for a large, empty box). The scared guest stays on the sidelines until a cat holds out his paw and bids Tiny Rabbit to "Come and play!" This is all it takes: the diminutive fellow joins in--and even helps the birthday mouse blow out the candles on his cake. Wallace's story may well give a needed shot of confidence to young partygoers. His wispy, childlike drawings capture endearing images: Tiny Rabbit covered with bits of tape and ribbon as he struggles to wrap his oversize gift; the nervous bunny riding on a bus to the event, sitting in the seat behind that occupied by the beribboned box; and the newly confident hero at home after the festivities, a pink party hat atop his head, making lists as he plans his own birthday.
