Grade 2-4 Abiner Smoothie, his other bear friends and "Puppy," a rabbit, go on a quest for the heart of a bear. They proceed from adventure to adventure, successfully rescuing damsels and performing good deeds. Their journey ends in a prehistoric land with dinosaurs, where they find the very first bear in a cave drawing. This original story ends up with the bears back at their great house with Abiner exclaiming about his astonishing dream. The illustrations, featuring blue and brown tones (including the text in blue and brown), are whimsical, softly colored, full of bears in historical costume, but so crowded and detailed in many cases that they are almost overwhelming. The overly long text has vocabulary and concepts that are often difficult, including such words as potentate and sojourners. Puppy is reading Spinoza, a figure that will mean nothing to the audience for this book. The word plays included (e.g., Folies Beargere) have adult humor and sophistication. By the end of the book, the adventures just seem tedious and hardly "bearable."Rita S. Padden, Wenatchee Public Library, Wash.

Kyte presents the second chronicle of the manor-born bear, Abiner Smoothie, known as The Last Elegant Bear. Restless one night, Abiner speculates on his ancestress, Lady Audrey Furwhistle, whose statue has been shrouded since she disgraced the family, centuries earlier. Abiner removes the cover and finds the image of a beautiful woman with a real ruby heart on a chain around the neck. The discovery pushes Abner into a quest to solve the mystery of Lady Audrey's sin, hinted at in a riddle chiseled into the statue. Puppy (Abiner's rabbit friend) and the bear's many relatives join him on board the Argyle, sailing to exotic lands and strange adventures. Along the way, the young Smoothie picks up more clues to the case of the red heart and he restores it, at last, to its rightful owner. Kyte's inspired puns and delicately colored paintings provide extra attractions to his funny, fanciful tale. 20,000 first printing.
