Grade 2-5Wyler's easy-to-read experi ment book will lead readers to make their own discoveries. Explanations of different types of soil, where they come from, insects and animals that live un derground, and how plants grow in it are followed by easy-to-follow experi ments, including Wyler's recipes for mud pies. The materials needed can be found around the home (or outside), and experiments can be done alone or by groups. Clarifying illustrations are in shades of light earth tones. Evans' The Dirt Book (Little, 1969; o.p.) provides more information but does not include experiments. Cartwright's Sand (Cow ard, 1973; o.p.) is limited in scope and content. Wyler's non-threatening topic should serve to promote an interest in science.Alice R. Arnett, Greenwood Elementary School, Louisville, Ky.
