Grade 6 Up This handbook is a good basic and comprehensive overview of the workings of the human body. Walpole begins with a sampling of some of the machines used to study anatomy. Cells are then introduced, followed by examinations of the various body systems. Each topic is given only a couple of pages, but treatment includes several high quality color and black-and-white illustrations, diagrams, and photos. The text consists primarily of terminology presented in bold print, defined and explained in the surrounding text; it is concise and easily understood. Most chapters include a section highlighted in yellow that presents items of interest about the topic. Ideas for experimental activities are also offered, although one on finding lung volume requires materials not readily available and could result in the inhalation of water if the instructions are misinterpreted. Another insert which lists facts about disease or dysfunction of the system appears sporadically. Sections on birth, growth, and the life stages, as well as a discussion of learning, memory, and communication are also included. ``Body Facts'' includes a chronology of medical achievements and an extensive illustrated glossary; information on contraception is included. While the information here can be found in a variety of other sources, this one pulls it all together in a compact, readable form. As such, it would be a good addition as a ready reference tool.
