Grade 6-9 A cry for help and understanding about a social problem that is growing in dimensions. Landau alternates chapters which define and expose the problem in factual, if weighted, terms with chapters which reveal the personal and emotion-charged stories of the people who are homeless in America. The great strength of this book is its focus on the human dimension, but it sometimes substitutes vignettes for depth of presentation. The overall problem seems to pale in light of the individual suffering that is presented. All in all, readers come away with a better grasp of the variety of factors which produce homeless people and a greater reluctance to judge and condemn the people who have lost the most basic necessity. Print is fairly large, but there is no illustrative material to break up the text. This is a sound but message-laden treatment of a problem which is not likely to go away. It will be most useful in combination with other sources. Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, Va.
