After Charlene receives an anonymous letter claiming that her husband murdered his first wife, she and her visiting cousin Marjorie wait in the isolated house by the lake--with the lights out and the phone dead--for him to come home

Marjorie is invited to spend part of the summer in the care of her much-admired older cousin, Charlene, who is married to David. Marjorie finds herself drawn into an elaborate plot: Charlene pretends that David is trying to kill her and sets up a scene in which she "accidently" kills him first. She had to murder David before he could divorce her and leave her without his riches. The book is a self-indulgent experiment on the part of York, who has built a reputation for writing genuinely frightening mysteries. Marjorie narrates, and because there isn't much of a mystery, her time is spent describing the weather and locales of the story. Intriguing overtones, but this is short-story material, not a full-fledged novel. Ages 12-up.
