From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-- This picture book may depict an ordinary day in the idealized "Dick and Jane" world of the 1950s, but it seems light years away from the 1980s. Three white children and their doting mother spend the day in and around their huge country home. The text is unimaginative and choppy. A thunderstorm is described as follows: "The thunder was loud. The lightning was bright. The rain was wet." The illustrations echo the disappointing quality of the writing. Although the landscapes and flowers are superficially pretty, Ayers' people do not look natural. Text and illustration don't always match: the sugar cookies mentioned in the text have chocolate chips in the pictures. The little girl wears a dress and matching ribbon and eats without spilling a drop of soup on her highchair tray. In short, this book seems a nostalgic fantasy about a world few people ever knew. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

From Publishers Weekly:

It's an ordinary day in the life of a boy and his friends and family. The boy greets the day from his bedroom window in a magnificent Victorian house. The beautiful and clear morning is the time for discovering plants and animals in the yard. Boating by the river ends abruptly when a thunderstorm hits but a glorious rainbow heralds the lovely evening ahead. The boy's mother makes soup and cookies for the children. In the evening, they enjoy the stars and fireflies; the ordinary yet idyllic day comes to an end at bedtime. The sentiments behind the story are sweet, but the way the text conveys them is simplistic and dull. Ayers (the illustrator of Jennifer's Rabbit ) creates gentle, color-filled pictures, although certain details from the text do not correspond to the illustrations (it is hard to find the ants gathering food, for example, and the cookies appear to be chocolate chip, not sugar). Ages 3-6.
