Once again Pike gives readers a roller-coaster ride. Carl Timmons, a high-school senior in a small California town, is troubled by the accidental death of his best friend. Trying to achieve some normalcy in his life, he is drawn into the school scavenger hunt. His team includes an old friend, his best friend's girl, her handicapped brother, and three newcomers to the town. As the hunt progresses, it takes a freakish turn with an horrific ending that leaves readers shaken but hopeful. The plot and mood move along consistently, drawing readers in and sustaining an uneasy feeling throughout. Parts of the book are very suspenseful, while others give readers a chance to catch their breath. Scant characterization at the beginning is so well done that readers will be compelled to keep reading to find out more. A skillfully woven ending clears up any questions about the characters.
