Reviews

This novel purports to be a three-part petition to the Pope for Beatification of Frederich Loebus, who is deemed a "miracle-worker." Part 1 is Loebus's own account of his 1941 desertion from the German army to Africa, where nomads literally try to turn him into a goat. He survives this experience (though just barely) and, with the aid of an impressed Sister Marie DuChamp (her account is offered in Part 2) flees the French authorities. Part 3, by an alcoholic American expatriate named Hawley, tells how Loebus's survival powers in the desert convinced the tribes he was a witch, despite his death in 1977 back at the nun's missionary post. No one is immune to suggestiveness, apparently. Superstition accumulates like the tribal fetishes bestowed on a charmed tree where Loebus's body is hung and is just as disquieting as the main fetish, a snake. This is recommended for collections of serious fiction.
