When rock star Ken Cryer discovers the dead body of one of his guests propped in gruesome mock seduction on his bed, Superintendent Bone returns to sift through the myriad of potential murderers

Stacey, a name adopted by the British authors of Goodbye, Nanny Gray and A Knife at the Opera , here offers a third novel featuring the endearing Superintendent Bone. A widower settled in a country town with his daughter Charlotte (Cha), Bone enjoys the company of good friends as he recovers from the tragic loss of his wife and launches an investigation into a murder at the mansion of rock star Ken Cryer. During a party, one of Cryer's numerous guests shot Alix Hamilton, a seductive "woman" later revealed to be transvestite Alex Hervey. Also involved is the theft of a priceless religious object, possibly--Bone theorizes--by a born-again fanatic outraged by Cryer's ownership of a sacred symbol. Tracking suspects, the superintendent stumbles on second murder victim, slain to avenge cruel tricks played by Alex in his female role. Bone solves these cases in his own quiet way in a mystery that doubles as a touching tale of Bone's discovery of new love.

Chief inhabitant of this traditional British mystery Detective Robert Bone ( A Knife at the Opera ) chases the killer of beautiful Alix Hamilton (a.k.a. Alex Hervey, cross-dresser), shot to death at a rock star's party. A representative host of suspects is questioned, while Bone, a widower, slowly falls victim to the charms of a school teacher. Scenes of rock pandemonium and cheerful, cat-induced domesticity alternate with an otherwise dry-toned, extremely pared down, and narrowly focused plot. Slightly uncomfortable, and short, but for most collections.

"The party at the Manor had been a smash, and rock star Ken Cryer was feeling well pleased. . . until he found golden Alix Hamilton in his bed. Despite her seductive pose, Alix didn't fancy Ken, or anyone else. She was dead-shot twice, with two different guns, in a room Cryer had specifically locked against intruders. For Superintendent Robert Bone, these were only the first complications in a case that would include champagne corks that masked the sound of gunfire, a missing suspect, a stolen religious artifact, an orphaned cat, and the unexpected assistance of one very pretty biology teacher. But it would take a second body to lead Bone, at last, to the unrepentant murderer."; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 001936
