Grade 1-3-- A centuries-old custom of herding diary cattle to the high Alpine meadows in the summer months is the basis for this story set in Switzerland. Pierre and Valerie can barely contain their excitement of being included in the annual event for the first time. Deep concern clouds Pierre's anticipation, however, for his father plans to sell Melody, his own cow. She is old and does not give enough milk to justify keeping her. Although worried, the boy finds joy in the long trek to the lush meadows and in the hard, daily work at their chalet. A sudden storm rushes upon them one day, and the cattle scatter for shelter among the rocks. Pierre can not find Melody or hear her distinctive bell. The tension builds to a dramatic rescue and the satisfying conclusion as the animal becomes famous throughout the valley. Panoramic, pastoral watercolor scenes provide an eye-catching backdrop for the action. The text maintains excitement and deftly weaves information about another culture into the plot. This is a fine example of a picture book's cross-cultural classroom use. The story moves quickly and smoothly, with a manageable vocabulary. The sweeping, happy, and evocative illustrations provide total cohesion. By all means--buy it! --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
